Corrosion in fertilizer industry - 1.2 Elemental sulphur attack

WATCH THE VIDEO HERE OR READ ON BELOW!  Elemental sulphur attack is NOT sulphidation or hydrogen sulphide corrosion. It is an aqueous corrosion phenomenon. It considers two modes -  acidification of sulphur - formation of sulphuric acid 2.      direct cathodic reduction of sulphur with anodic dissolution of iron The lowering of pH is the main source of corrosion in both the methods. The phenomenon is temperature dependent. It increases with increase in temperature and becomes particularly severe above the melting point of sulphur (~112.8 degree Celsius). Hydrogen sulphide present in the petroleum may aggravate the sulphur attack by enhancing uniform pitting corrosion. Monoethylene glycol is used to prevent condensate formation ans may be present in traces in the feedstock petroleum. Corrosion rate and pipe design

Corrosion is a serious issue. However, corrosion engineers are rarely asked about it during the designing of components. It is only when the components fail that people remember there are people who have studied corrosion for their whole life and would provide a solution. The design problems are really quite simple, and the loss of money could have been avoided had the company bothered to involve a corrosion engineer in the first place. Let me illustrate this with an example of a factory near the sea. Suppose a mild steel pipe is fitted inside the factory to transport 1 wt. % hydrochloric acid. The engineer has a choice between selecting pipes of 5 mm and 10 mm thickness. To save money, they go for the pipe with the 5 mm thickness because it has been 'successfully used by the other customers'. Over the course of a year, it is seen that the pipe has started leaking at certain places. Further investigation reveals that those sections have thinned to half of their thickn...

CRV stands for critical reliability variables. It notes the variables, i.e. parameters which are the most important in damaging the reliability of the equipment. In simple terms, it is that parameter which if changed will damage your equipment. This parameter is important in risk-based inspection. It helps to note the exact parameters, may be temperature, pressure, pH, which will increase the risk of corrosion and damage.
